I’m pulling out of the race

You’ve probably heard that the Democrats have been suggesting that I enter the presidential race to resolve the competition between Obama and Hillary. I guess they figured that my political stature would immediately cause both candidates to withdraw in light of my own candidacy.

Unfortunately I must regretfully withdraw my candidacy. You see Hillary’s & Obama’s supporters have been examining the tapes and videos of some of my pastor’s sermons. We met yesterday in Chicago where they showed me the tapes “inviting” me to withdraw. Once I saw the tapes I pulled out immediately—I’d be dead meat once these get on YouTube.

In Chicago I heard one of my pastors from long ago saying that the Roman Catholic Pope may be the anti-Christ. I had forgotten that, but I didn’t get up and walk out so I’m fried politically. Another pastor I sat under in college said, “If they lined up a group of these long-haired hippies and just shot a group I bet there’d be less of these demonstrations.” That would kill me. And they had the video of my pastor back in the 70’s who said, “Christians should be totally opposed to equal rights for women—God made women from Man’s rib, not the other way around.” Ok that would end my hopes. Then there was the video from the Sunday following 9/11 when my pastor preached that the 9/11 attack was God punishing America for its sins like abortion. They reminded me I was in the congregation that morning and "refused to walk out or leave the church.” I knew right then that my hope to be President of the USA was crushed forever, so I withdrew.

I’d probably have made a better candidate for President if I had not attended church at all. --Keith Drury 3/30/08

While we're on quotes... one I heard in recent history:
"We have a madman in the White House."

Though we're pretty low-tech and don't record a thing, so it didn't really happen. So if you want to be Vice Pres, well...

Hah.
I love this post.
Great point!

Who amongst us doesn't have an embarrassing Uncle Edgar or cousin Bertha with strange views?

OK, so being a pastor is admittedly a different role, but nevertheless the tired "guilt by association" thing is getting old, and seems to be what drives much of today's politics.

I love it. So telling.

It is interesting that Obama can only get fried by a "youtubed moment" that was not even him speaking. I think the reality is that many people just haven't heard this kind of preaching and don't know what to do with it when they hear it. And by "this kind of preaching," I don't just mean "black" preaching (though it includes that) but also other categories like "prophetic" preaching which draws on the extremes of the "revivalist" tradition.

You never had much of a chance anyway... you like to hike too much, and you would need to campaign during summer.

Thanks for the well written sarcasm:-)

PLEASE someone tell me this is an April fools joke and coach is still running! Next thing we'll hear is you're not willing to serve as G.S. if elected.

I've been trying to think of a way to make this point in a creative fashion like this for over a month!

Glad you've got the brains to do it... excellent!

Hmmm...so if you heard your pastor say "God d**n America", would you ever forget that? Not once, but over and over...you wouldn't walk out even then? Forget political ambitions, what about just being godly? When is it ever right for us to condemn the world instead of rescue it from condemnation?

So what is up with the holiness people hating on Catholics anyway? I have heard so many people attacking them over the years and it confuses me.

At least you have written 'I like Catholics' to express you point of view; now you just have to write 'I like women pastors' and 'I like Muslims' to conclude your series.

From a Republican perspective, I was amazed at how Mr. Obama handled his relationship with his pastor. He distanced himself, from the rhetoric and not the person, in an honorable fashion. That may not have been the best political move...but that revealed a certain strength of character.

It is hard to find truth in a political race. I pray that we all survive and move on to greater things...like sharing the Gospel.
